just a bit of a light hearted thread for us to get our teeth into. I've been putting all my Hawkwind stuff onto my Ipod, and playing it in alphabetical order, i have been listening to the different versions of songs back to back, i prefer some versions over others.
This got me thinking, so how about each week, we'll choose a Hawkwind song, and find out which version is our preferred version, throw some reasons in too if you have one.
the first one i'll throw open for you..

I quite like the earlier slow version from about 1980 on the This is Hawkwind Don Not Panic LP. It's possible to track the development of the song from a jam at the end of Magnu (Sonic Assassins) to the Sonic Attack LP studio version and beyond, to the faster, heavier Live Chronicles and the version with a synth into c1987.

I like the Do Not Panic version as well. But the top version for me is the one found on Yule Ritual. 2 things about this version appeal to me. Richard settles into a nice groove throughout, and a few nice little tricks on the hi-hat. Jez Hugget too contributes with some nice sax playing.

I like the Do Not Panic version too but would have to choose the 1981 7" single version.

Can we include, ahem 'unofficial' versions ? If so then I'll plump for the one they played at Porchester in August really stripped down and tribal

Yes I think it will have to be the Yule Ritual for me too, although I am fairly sure...as much as one can be given the passage of time(cough)..... that the first time I ever heard Angles live was around the 80/81 mark and I was stuck by what a great stand out song it was then and even now I continue to enjoy its inclusion in a Hawkwind set.........

For me, the 1981 Sonic Attack version.
I really like the dense sound on it, with all the drones, swirly bits and swooshes.
