Been persuaded by 16-yr old son to rent "Pacific Rim". Very enjoyable mindless pap, if you like giant human-controlled robots fighting with rampaging aliens across Hong Kong...for 2 hours.

Saw Stealth (the 2005 one about an AI fighter plane) for the first time, last night. I suppose, technically, it's an SF movie - but it's very near future, especially in 2014.

Enjoyed it, perhaps because it had elements from some films I like - Dr Strangelove, The Forbin Project, Dark Star (verbally defusing a mad bomb) and some of the HAL bits from Space Odyssey. I liked the CGI too.

The credits at the end listed 45 stuntmen, so that gives an idea of what the film's like.

If you don't already know the story of Rodriguez, 'Searching For Sugarman' weighs in at No9 in the Vulture best music docs.
It is a true story of intrigue & delight - A must see for all musicologists.

The Reader
Quality film;
Michael Berg (David Kross), a teen in postwar Germany, begins a passionate but clandestine affair with Hanna Schmitz (Kate Winslet), an older woman who enjoys having classic novels read to her. Then Hanna mysteriously disappears, leaving Michael heartbroken and confused. Years later, Michael, now a law student, gets the shock of his life when he sees Hanna on trial for Nazi war crimes.

Heavy Metal in Baghdad

"In the late summer of 2006, in the middle of the insurgency, filmmakers Eddy Moretti and Suroosh Alvi traveled to Baghdad to meet and interview the only heavy metal band in Iraq, Acrassicauda. "Heavy Metal in Baghdad" is the story of the band and its members, young Iraqis whose lives have been distorted and displaced by years of continual warfare in their homeland. The filmmakers have collected glimpses into the struggles of Acrassicauda as they try to stay together and stay alive. Their struggle is the untold story of the hopes and dreams of an entire generation of young Iraqis."

I watched this again a couple of days ago. I first saw it a few years ago on the 'Imagine...' spot on the BBC - that version had an additional 'addendum' detailing the current situation for the subjects of the film (two had made it to the USA and two were stuck in Istanbul trying to obtain visas to the US or Europe). I think they all made it to America eventually?

C.C. Rider with Anne Margrock.
Logans Run, yet another post apocalyptic, cannibalistic feast.
