Production of this Gonzo reissue has been a bit of a pain at times, but it's out now. Only last week I was troubleshooting the final few problems, but all seems well, now. Any HW fans get a copy, they can have fun playing "spot the Hawkwind lyrics" ... for instance, I didn't know until early this year that the Hawkwind version of "Spirit of the Age" was born out of two completely separate Calvert poems. More info hereThere's no plans for it to be a limited print run this time, by the way.

I am really pleased with this release and have pre-ordered a copy. Thanks Graham for your hard work on this. But I do think it would have been better as a limited edition slip cased, signed and numbered by the publisher/proof reader etc, in an edition of say 200. I would have paid 100 quid for that. I am still waiting for that "other" publishing company to release what I describe, but as a Calvert poetry boxed set, including "Earth Ritual". I still cant understand why they haven't got off there asses and offered what they originally promised.
Oh well.

Oh, wow. I suppose I might have stayed involved, had it been in that format - but they'd have had to twist my arm a lot, to keep me on board. Guess we could have had two simultaneous releases... the £10 available-forever one, and a £100 tarty version limited to 200 copies! Personally, I deeply dislike artificial supply constriction: I think stuff like this should be available forever, and cost no more than around three pints of beer.

How does this version differ from the Voiceprint reissue a few years back (which came with a CD)? Cheers

The earlier one was in pamphlet format, ie A4 folded to A5 size and stapled in the middle. This one is proper binding ("perfect-bound") and thus has a proper spine.
The earlier one had several poems all crammed onto a page, whereas now they're spaced out (!) and they all have their own page(s) - even Insomnia, which is just 3 lines long.
Personally, I think it's a far more comfortable read - both on the eyes, and how it feels when turning the pages. But then I'm a bit biased, as I was involved in production from Day One. I think Steve Starfarer is going to review it, so you might like to watch out for that.

I was wondering that too! I will just have to get a copy anyway. No 100 quid editions for me thanks! There is quite a lot of Calvert material about, not really published-- such as his plays. Silchon Gulch does exist as a lo-fi recording. I wish it would see the light of day. Voiceprint reissued so many rip-off unlistenable live recordings, but where is the better material? Dave Brock set some of Centigarde 232 to music, which works for me. Alan Davey has had a go at some too (even 5 in one track!), but the same ones. Spirits Burning used one too. I wish somebody would finish the job. If Dave hasn't the time, there must be plenty of Hawks or ex-Hawks who could manage some good ambient backgrounds? Certainly more interetsing than yet another version of Silver Machine!

How about an open-source Calvert remix project? An extension of the yet-to-be-started HawkwindWiki perhaps ..hopefully not on the limited-collectors-edition wiki

That has been suggested before and it is a great idea. There are a lot of poems in Centigrade 232 and other material too.
I doubt Jill Calvert would mind? Just guessing.... as long as copyright etc was sorted out.

There is a plan for some indexing of an archive or hoard, fairly soon. I don't know any more than that, though. Presumably the indexing would be a prelude to possible release of the items? I gather some tapes are involved but I really don't know any more than that. It could be a truckload of Ampex master reels, or just a jiffy bag of C60 cassettes, for all I know. Whenever and whatever, it'll probably be announced first on the Gonzo blog, I imagine.

Gonzo is one of the various record labels you'll find Hawkwind on. Formerly Voiceprint, Gonzo have licening rights to release various Hawkwind thingies - and Gonzo Blog is, effectively, the NewsZine of that record label. My fav releases are Glasto '90 and the Weird Tapes range! Anyway, Steve Starfarer has got a copy of the Centigrade 232 book, and he's reviewed it on the Starfarer site (the 2007 release is reviewed first)... And the 2012 edition book designer talks on the Gonzo publisher site about who made the decisions for that third edition cover design.

That does explain quite a lot. Thanks.
