Interesting article from the New Statesman, there. What would happen if we were all paid a "universal basic income" and left to our own devices ?

the barter system in Russia was a good one i thought but you need something to barter with - milk co-ops used to be good here - the old adage of teaching a man to fish will feed him for life has an element of truth - the basic wage for all would drive the prices of basic commodities down i guess - and at the end of the day what proportion of your wage would a loaf of bread be?- i'd imagine much the same once things settled and were run properly

The current global economic crisis is caused by the grossly disproportionate distribution of wealth. An economy where 1% sit on 98% of the money is unsustainable.

I sometimes what would happen, if a "bail-out" just gave the millions to every member of the population, instead of the usual procedure?

Money being spent in the local economy is often a good thing, but if local shops are suddenly flooded by millionaires, then I imagine there might be inflationary consequences.

Well, it may seem like utopian madness, but who knows if we're heading that way or not ? When you look at the modern world and compare it to the world of only 50 years ago, there has been massive changes. So anything is theoretically possible. ;-)

As Michael Palin sang, "Finland, Finland, Finland! The country where I quite want to be ...."

"Will Finland's basic income trial help the jobless?"
