From :The Sun
(Edited excerpt)

US Navy deploys bizarre floating white ball off North Korea’s coast to shoot down psychopath Kim Jong-un’s nukes

Strange floating vessel is part of a space based missile defence shield to safeguard the US from Kim Jong-un's nuclear rockets

Pentagon chiefs have dispatched its weirdest secret “Star Wars” weapon from Pearl Harbour in Hawaii to intercept North Korean nuclear missiles bound for California.

Washington is pinning its hope on averting nuclear apocalypse on this extraordinary self-propelled 280 foot, 50,000-ton mammoth.

Called the Sea-Based X-Band Radar (SBX), it is said to be so powerful it could detect a baseball over San Francisco from the other side of the continent.

Now it has reportedly set sail from its base in Pearl Harbour – famous for Japan’s deadly surprise attack in 1941 on a US Navy base there which brought American into World War 2.

It is understood the US Government confirmed it has been deployed to the North Korean coast and local people have snapped it leaving Hawaii several weeks ago.

Its role is to defend against Kim Jong-un‘s doomsday weapons by directing interceptor rockets.

And the threat is all too real.

Rogue state North Korea conducted its fourth nuclear test in January and fifth in September in defiance of furious international reaction and stiff sanctions.

It also test-fired more than 20 ballistic missiles, including the mid-range Musudan missile, which theoretically is capable of flying as far as the US territory of Guam.

Pyongyang is thought to be working on a nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missile that can hit the American mainland.

Sea-Based X-Band Radar (SBX) can spot one of Kim’s incoming missiles, track it through space and guide rocket-interceptors to blast it into a billion bits before it gets anywhere near downtown LA.

This wacky weapon of nuclear war is actually an oil rig with the world’s most powerful radar equipment encased in domes.

The 28-story structure - measuring two football fields in area - propels itself across the Pacific at a speed of 8-9 knots with its own engine.

Some 86 US Navy and civilian sailors crew the vessel.

Costing £740m , it was born out of President Ronald Reagan’s Star Wars program which aimed to create a space-based US missile defence.

But some conspiracy theorists believe the SBX is masquerading as a floating missile defence and is really something much more sinister.

It is claimed it is a secret weapon that has the ability to cause devastating earthquakes .

(conspiracy theorists claim it inadvertently caused the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan that killed 15,000)

South Korean weapons expert has warned the secretive state could build up to 79 nuclear devices capable of turning the US into a radiation-blasted hellhole by the end of 2020.

Jong-un has made it clear he wants to do just that

Earlier this year the psychopathic tyrant issued one of his most chilling threats yet, promising “doom” is “drawing near”.

A spokesperson said: "North Korean scientists are in high spirit to detonate H-bombs of hundreds of kilotons and megatons, capable of wiping out the whole territory of the US all at once."

An eerie image that is.
Hopefully the rig survives monsoon season.
There's definitely propaganda mixed in with the news article.
It's like the threat of nuclear annihilation we all grew up with in the 50's and 60's.
Maybe Obama will declare martial law and oust the current presidency candidates.
I'm waiting to read about Russia's response to all this.

some interesting thoughts there, Voilodian Ghagnasdiak. I hadn't thought of Obama declaring martial law, though it is within the powers given to the executive office during the Reagan years.
, it is an highly propagandized article

You want to be highly suspicious of any 'news' emanating from the Sun. Not known for it's journalistic integrity (especially in Liverpool).

so I gather!
the SBX has been news before,
since about 2007 I think, if
memory serves. I wonder if
the the thing even works?
you know? no mention of there
being more than one of them,
and if that is the case, then
why is it not less conspicuous?
could be a decoy ~ high visibility,
all white!

That's not news, that's conjecture !
If it's news at all then it's skewed news. Designed to put the fear of wrath into the viewing populus. I refuse to live in that kind of fear & say let 'em get on with it while I sit right down & eat my dinner, G'nite !

conjecture, perhaps ~ but U.S. and Asian Intelligence have been on top of the DPRK's activities like a frog on a lily pad. There is a lot of sabre-rattling, but there comes a point ~ like now ~ when the blade is too close to the quick. If anyone is attempting to put fear into the world populous, it's Kim Jung Un ~ only he's on a suicide trip and taking his entire nation of people with him.

what do you mean 'poor stuff', Brown Dawn?
?

...I never did read Yeats - there must be a missing context without frame of reference, since the question seems, on the surface and in some ways, gratuitous.
... the dancer and the dance are one and the same ~ a dance does not exist until it is danced ~ similarly, one is not a dancer until one dances.

I've just had the most ludicrous mental image of KimJung Un prancing like a fairy to "White Bird" by Its A Beautiful Day

think I was on the wrong thread Vik - apologies - my comment was as regards the crawl to the whitehouse and the school yard antics of the candidates involved and the media cash in - agree with Smugdruggler as regards the nuclear hype - I still don't understand the world police situation - hiroshima and nagasaki being an example - fern man rued his involvement - year's was a complicated individual - his epitaph is a good reflection of life I feel

Ah, okay !

I agree, at least in part, with Smugdruggler as regards the hype,
the media never miss an opp. to cash -in ~ the Trump campaign another glaring example of that. though the facts about Kim Jung Un remain ~ he did say those things, and is playing a dangerous game with nuclear weapons. I believe Kim Jung Un knows full well if he were to ever attempt to launch a nuclear strike, he would be destroyed in an overwhelming defensive response.
The question is, does the child-king even care at all whether or not he (or his people) live?

Sorry this is so long, but I have an interest in North Korea ever since I met members of the British North Korea Appreciation Society or whatever it's called back in the 80s. My politics are left-wing and North Korea clearly isn't socialist or democratic in any sense of the words, so I started wondering what it actually is. Our media doesn't really go into that at all, easier and maybe more convenient to point the finger at mad dictators who threaten us all (from a country that can't keep the lights on at night).

I think the thing to remember about North Korea is that everything the regime says and does is aith an eye on internal propaganda purposes. The regime isn't irrational, at least I think not, because if it were it would have fallen apart a few decades ago after the original "Great Leader" Kim Il Sung died.

North Korea abandoned even calling itself socialist back in the late 1970s. Whatever the original intentions back in the 1940s and 50s (Kim Il Sung was an everyday Maoist and a popular and effective leader in the resistance to Japanese occupation in World War II) the official ideology is something called "juche".

Juche is a kind of cross between the Chinese ideas of Confucious, that the Emperor rules all, all must obey the Emperor, the Emperor is all-wise and below the Emperor is a kind of feudal barony that runs things. They even see the "Great Leader" (dead for decades but still officially head of state and all must praise him daily), the "Dear Leader" and now the "Great Successor" as feudal Chinese-style God-Emperors in all but name. Lots of propaganda like "here the Dear Leader puts the world's best nuclear scientists right about some tricky maths they couldn't do" and "here the Great Leader shows the baffled surgeons how to do a heart transplant".

The other thing in Juche is Korean racial supremacism. Racism, especially racial supremecism, is generally barking mad, but Juche takes it to an extreme. Everyhting was invented by Korean or ideas stolen from Koreans by Korea's enemies. North Korea is a paradise where the superior race lives, and all North Koreans are grateful to live there. There are also some bonkers South Koreans who also think the Koreans are the "master race", so it's a belief not restricted just to the North.

Juche also teaches that North Korea stands alone and always will and must be totally self-sufficient in all things. Though in reality they'd be stuffed without their nearest thing to an ally, China, helping them out a bit from time to time.

And Juche holds that the military is the most important thing there is, because without it the paradise on Earth known as the DRNK would be otherthrown by enemies external and internal. And like soldiers obey their officers without question, all citizens must also obey without question or their paradise will fall.

Sounds a lot like a certain period in Germany's history in many ways doesn't it?

Well, yes and no.

For a start, Germany was a major industrial power by 1900. Korea was not, and the North still isn't. It suits the leadership to claim for internal consumption that DRNK is under continual and real threats, and every so often they have to do something to show off their power to their grateful, scared population.

Which is very different to doing something really stupid, like attacking the South or anywhere else. The regime must know it probably couldn't win a war with anyone. if it did manage to grab the South, what with South Koreans being a bit less than convinced by the Great Successor's god-status and fond of their consumer electronics, electricity 24 hours a day and eating regular, varied meals etc. Trying to rule millions of people not thoroughly saturated in Juche would be asking for trouble.

So I think the regime wants to survive and wants to be at the top of their national heap but has little ambition beyond that. Life for them is most likely very comfortable, unless they step out of line and their comrades decide it's time the dissenter starred in a Great Whatever-he's-Called temper tantrum.

Let off bombs, especially nuclear bombs, anywhere that matters and that will attract retaliation. Whether that retaliation is China losing patience and telling them to go starve, a nuclear retaliation or any of the world's special forces or even the Chinese Ambassador's security people bumping off the top brass doesn't matter because dead is dead and if you're not dead, who wants to live in and rule over a wasteland?

Trouble is that Juche has been used to build a paranoid population who really do seem to (mostly) believe what they're told. I'm sure they would fight hard if attacked, so the best thing is probably not to attack the place but let the Juche system collapse of it's own accord, though the collapse might be the time the regime is most dangerous.....

I keep saying "regime" rather than "leader" because no King, no Emperor and no dictator rule alone. They need the support and backing of lots of people, from close advisors down to the soldiers and workers. Imagine where Hitler would have been if in 1938 the Army, Luftwaffe and Navy had said "Invade Czechoslovakia and risk starting another World War after what happened in the last one? Are you mad? Go conquer Budapest by yourself if you want it that badly Adolf. Here's a map, bye-bye".

Cheers for sharing your thoughts, Paradoxcity.
I am honestly more concerned about countries
such as Iran, Pakistan, who realistically pose
more of a threat to global security. Kim Jung Un
is laughing at the U.N. member-nations and
polluting the environment, aside from grabbing
headlines and causing reasoning folks to ponder
where the line between braggadocio and
beligerence may be crossed by KJu, if ever

[Edit]

It is, I suppose, worth pointing out that KJu has purged (as in executed) members of his top-cronies, including an Uncle. (a pattern?)
