excerpt:

[North Korea's] leaders appear to be irrational, capricious, malevolently messianic and deeply cruel. They have acted on a desire to sell their nuclear technology to anyone with money (the Assad regime in Syria was one such customer); and they have proven themselves to be almost completely impervious to outside pressure.

second excerpt:

There are countless reasons to believe that Donald Trump is uniquely unqualified to serve as president. We at The Atlantic made an attempt to count at least some of them, which are listed in the magazine’s recent endorsement of Hillary Clinton. But let us place to the side for the moment many of Trump’s disqualifications—his racism, his xenophobia, and his ghastly misogyny; his ignorance of American history, his disdain for the Constitution, and his contempt for the venerable and indispensable norms of American political behavior—and focus, for the sake of pre-Election Day clarity, on a single question: Which of the two major party candidates is better equipped, by experience, judgment, and temperament, to manage the North Korean threat without triggering, advertently or otherwise, a nuclear exchange that could lead to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Americans—and millions of Koreans and Japanese?

end excerpt

Talking about the North Korean 'threat' is a bit of a joke really, comparing it with the military power directed at North Korea from the US. Just who is provoking who?

The joint military 'exercises' that are conducted on the doorstep of this unstable dictatorship are on a large scale and have consisted of mock nuclear bombing. I believe this is something that has been done in the past too. Hardly conduicive to peace.

If you look at the history of US bombing of North Korea (pretty much literally bombing them back to the stone age in the 50's), combined with this kind of parading, how do you expect they are going to respond?

Some good commentary here: https://zcomm.org/znetarticle/the-us-ti ... ean-mouse/

"Even if North Korea had a rocket that could aim straight, what could it expect to gain by attacking South Korea or Japan? This central question is never asked, much less answered, by the screamers on FOX, the Senators from Lockheed-Martin, or the Representatives from Northrop-Grumman.

If the illogic sounds familiar, it is. There was never an answer to the question: Why would the USSR attack Western Europe or the United States during the Cold War? What the Soviets would have gained by attacking, and what North Korea could achieve with aggression, is obvious: Absolutely nothing — beyond self-destruction.

With luck, the US tiger will just hold its breath and tremble at the mousey shadow of North Korea, which never stops provoking. A few years ago it had the nerve to ask the White House for a promise that it won’t be preemptively attacked.

interesting, and something like logic, however ~ as I've said already, I don't think the real threat comes from any 'potential' attack on anyone by DPRK. it is more likely to come out of nefarious, or at the very least indiscriminate, sale of weapons-grade nuclear material and/or technology to individuals or groups with decidedly no reservations whatsoever in regard to suicide.

Yes, well arms trading doesn't make for a safer world that's for sure. But it's sure good for business.

The US has done nothing much but talk about how we should reduce nuclear weapons. Israel is armed to the teeth with their help. I am just as worried about discriminate sale of nuclear weapons to states that we are supposed to believe are keepers of the peace.

I believe the west is making the world more dangerous with recklessly short sighted foreign policy, making it more likely for lunatics to want to get hold of nuclear weapons and actually use them.

agreed, Etherealise ~ is a deep mess-o-poo been done here on old planet earth.

and it seems to only get deeper.
I'm not sure where to post this, new topic? perhaps, but maybe instead a lateral development :

http://www.cnn.com/2016/11/07/opinions/ ... index.html

this article about the fears of cyberwar, in the wake of recent events, steers us into the bizarre dimension of the world some of us have feared since the 1970's (remember the uni bomber? ) taking us down a path from which ~ and I really hate being pessimistic, but ~ we will surely never return.

someone said once (a couple millenia ago) this was going to happen.

Well, we've heard all this before :

https://www.google.com/amp/www.voanews. ... 17119.html?

iirc, it has been reported that DPRK and Kim Jung Un have vast gold reserves, which they barter clandestinely, one of the reasons they've been able to laugh at sanctions thus far.
And of course, they have nuclear weapons technology to sell to anyone with goods for trade. What the news agencies won't tell us is who is helping DPRK.
That in of itself is a major clue that were being mushroom farmed

the simple things are what really matter ~ be wary of those whose efforts serve to complicate

http://www.upi.com/Top_News/World-News/ ... =sec&or=tn

SEOUL, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- The United States and South Korea agreed Tuesday to strengthen the regular deployment of U.S. strategic assets to the peninsula, according to Seoul's defense ministry.

The planned measure is to better prepare both sides for North Korea's nuclear and missile threats, local news service News 1 reported Wednesday, local time.

The proposal was the outcome of the first session of the high-level Extended Deterrence Strategy and Consultation Group that involved defense officials and diplomats from both countries, according to a press release from the defense ministry.

The EDSCG was established in October, when U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter met with South Korean Defense Minister Han Min-koo.

U.S. commitment to extended deterrence on the peninsula was reaffirmed, and the United States is to continue to provide the same level of nuclear deterrence on the peninsula as the U.S. mainland.

The United States has already demonstrated its commitment to deterrence after North Korea's fifth nuclear test. B-1B bombers were deployed from the U.S. air base in Guam twice, sending a strong warning to Pyongyang in September.

The announcement comes at a time when South Korea's arms procurement agency is adding more ships to the country's naval fleet.

The Defense Acquisition Program Administration said Tuesday it has decided to order two 2,800-ton-class escort ships, Yonhap reported.

Right-eo!

... just keep tapping those buttons until someone's fat thumb accidentally hits the red one :

from RYAN PICKRELL
12\22\2016

"Pyongyang is threatening “imminent war” in response to the latest batch of sanctions brought against it by the United Nations.

The latest UNSC ‘resolution on sanctions’ has created the danger of imminent war on the Korean Peninsula, as there are no judicial and institutional mechanisms to avert a war and armed conflicts and the ‘resolution’ is as good as a declaration of war,” the North Korean foreign ministry said in a statement Thursday, according to Yonhap News Agency. “The U.S. and other countries involved in adopting the ‘resolution on sanctions’ will have to be wholly responsible for the ensuing consequences
.”

Right, little Kimmy-boy ~ you get to start a war, but it will not be your fault, because no one should be punished for threatening to annihilate millions of innocent people whilst actively building WMDs with which to do so. Why would anybody have a problem with that? you pudgy little psychopath
