I have always loved this album, even if it lacks coherence. High Rise is brilliant but Bob got it wrong-- high rises are great to live in. I am sitting on the 29th floor now and have no urge to become a human starfish.

Didn't he live in one at the time though?

I'm not sure-- he was manic depressive. British council high rises are very depressing, however. I live in Asia where high rises are comfortable.

When I go to Spain I think of the same thing. Poor building materials, concrete that weathers badly, an aversion to painting things up. We can be so drab in this country sometimes. Not sure these places would look so good in 30 years time though.

I've always loved this album, it was actually one of the first bunch of Hawkwind albums I got. It's an odd one as it is a bit of a patchwork quilt, a strange compilation of tracks they had leftover. Quite a testament to the quality levels they had at the time. Even the outtakes on the Atomhenge edition are great - outtakes from an outtakes album and still great to listen to.

The track PXR5 is an odd one as it has a different feel to it, and almost acts as a bridge between the Calvert years and the Bronze stuff that came in the next two years.

Crucially it has two tracks with something conspicuously missing since 1975:
Lead vocals from Dave Brock. I loved it when he sang Infinity on the 2005 tour, fantastic song.
It's amazing to believe he took almost half a decade off from lead vocals, and yet on the next studio album (Levitation) I think he did all the vocals.

I love this album!
The title refers to the infamous night of the long knives sackings of Turner, Powell and Rudolph.
P=Powell
X= Turner.....referring to X in search of space
R=Rudolph
5= Meaning the band is now a 5 piece.
The sleeve note stating "this is the last but one" had everyone thinking there was only gonna be one more album after this, but it actually meant it was all recorded before the hawklords period but released after. A confusing way of putting it and one which had a lot of fans worried.

The Hammersmith and Leicester De monteford hall gigs were recorded on the autumn tour 1977, so i wonder what has happened to the rest of those recordings? Some has surfaced on various friends and relations and weird tapes, but it would be nice to have the complete gigs. For me, the live material from that tour is the peak of the Calvert years.

Infinity is Calvert-less it is but it has always been one my favourites! :o. I mean, race rhymes with space perfectly-- it's not even assonance. I love the chorus too. PXR5 is great too.
