It was a hook to get us unsuspecting victim's listening to Maconie's complete and entire show.
I shut it off 20 minutes after Lord of Light.
Don't promote a Hawkwind special and then go into an hour of playing royalty paying electronica bands.
I won't waste another Sunday in that manner.

Earlier, I pictured a scene in my head...

BBC Boss: "Right, we're gonna bung a bit of early Hawkwind in, this week, OK, Stuart, it's your turn..."

Stuart: "Oh, F---!"

BBC Boss: "...and you get Doremi..."

Stuart: "Christ...."

Listening live and unadulterated the whole show worked for me and not being a regular listener to the freak-zone or even 6music come to that. I have to say that Stuart Maconie sounded a little deflated with it all.
Apart from that, to hear Brainstorm from beginning to end surrounded by some cutting edge sounds worked well.
It could have done with Space is deep or Down through the night in place of TWL to give it a fuller flavour, but wow Lemmys backing vocals and bass does it for me on that album..

I didn't hear the whole show - just about 20 minutes either side of 'Brainstorm' - and it seemed mainly not a 'celebration' of the album but 'reading the cover notes from the CD'.

I used to listen regularly to the Freak Zone, but have gradually cooled to it, preferring Jarvis Cocker's show before (who is a fan - I know because I barged in fron of him at the queue for Hawkestra, and he also played the classic and 1981 versions of Sonic Attack one afternoon for fun).

Occasionally listen to freakzone. I prefer it when it's a Canterbury night. Seems to work the best.
