City of Lagoons I can take or leave but I like this album a lot. If there was a studio version of Time for Sale that could replace City of Lagoons it would be up there with the rest of the 70's albums.

Faunkdelic/ Parliament had da fonk. Sadly only Bootsy really does much now that brings the mother ship to mind, but the lesser known but brilliant Bernie Worrell is still very active with Bill Laswell and more, doing jazz, funk, dub or anything.

I forgot about Sun Ra. There was the whole 'spiritual jazz' era, pioneered by John Coltrane. His latest works like "Om" were rumoured to have been made under acid-- it was certainly 'out there'. Some of Miles electric era is psychedelic too-- like "Bitches Brew," which spawned the whole fusion movement, including Santana, Waether Report, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Tony William's Lifetime .. the list goes on.

Dave Brock says he only really listens to jazz, but won't give names.

..perhaps we could do a compare and contrast of Dave and Nik's vintage jazz collection? ..but 70's funk was something else man. I can kind of see where people are coming from on this.. if Hawkwynde had pursued the astounding sounds then instead of Quark, Strangeness and Charm we could have had a funky prog opera to sit alongside Jeff Wayne's The War of the Worlds. We could have had a line-up with Nik Turner and Tim Blake in it or something, making some wonderful music.. but I'm glad Dave kept it rock solid and played a yang to the prog rock yin. The heavy riffs and that is a major part of the band's sound. It would have been like Black Sabbath going funky..

Fabulous album I think! Completely different to much of the earlier material but that's part of the appeal, I like teh way each album throughout the 70s sounded different - if in mellow mood I often listen to this and the Hawklords album together. 'Steppenwolf' is lyrically brilliant and probably my favourite lyric of any Hawks track.
