Just got this from voiceprint....................

Forthcoming Release Recommendation: Hawkwind: Minneapolis 4th October 1989

In keeping with their stance as a "People's Band" Hawkwind have often released "Official Bootleg" CDs and the latest release from the bands vaults comes from 1989 when the band were celebrating their twentieth anniversary. This album was recorded in Minneapolis on the 4th of October 1989 when the line up of the band at this time featured Dave Brock, Harvey Bainbridge, Richard Chadwick and Alan Davey. Songs featured in the set captured on this double CD include Magnu, Hassan I Sahba, Wind of Change, Brainbox, Damnation Alley and Ejection.

I've not heard of this one, but I reckon Minneapolis 1991 would make a sizzlingly brilliant release, if Voiceprint had permission to pick it up and run with it.

Do we know what the sound quality is like, some of these live releases are awful.

What's the info on these Japanese releases then?

Isn't this minneapolis release the CD that was available through the Hawkwind Direct website. I think it is quite a good example of this very creative period of Hawkwind's history.

The term "Ripoff" springs to mind. Why would anyone want to buy them from Amazon at these prices when you can buy them for their uninflated price fom Atomhenge. It beggers belief.

Here is the url for Hawkwind direct http://www.hawkwinddirect.com where I got my copy of the Minneapolis CD

Bah! why all the fulminations-there's always been some dodginess of recording quality and royalties questioning our loyalties to these "official bootlegs," and alternate releases of the same albums w/different titles by different band members-a lesson I have learned, at my extra expense leading to a wtf moment in which I either support the band, whom I will probably never see as a life-long fan of 37 years, buying what my research indicates is the least dodgiest as this seems to be part of the Hawkwind Tradition. Support Voiceprint buy their product as that seems the direct route to "the band." However, given the collecting and out of print traditions, purchase each new product as it is released as it may not be there in 6 mo's-which speaks well to the lads staying power, which still amazes me. To many H-qoutes, not enough accolades.--Hawkhead

I saw Hawkwind on Sept. / 24 / 89 in Toronto.

This was the setlist:

Magnu, Down Through The Night,
Treadmill, Time We Left, Heads,
Hassan-i-Sahba, Wind of Change,
Assault & Battery, Golden Void,
Back in the Box, Arrival in Utopia,
Brainstorm, Dreamworker,
Damnation Alley, Needle Gun and lastly Ejection.

I haven't got a clue in regards to the sound quality of the recording
in Minneapolis all I know is that the band were very well rehearsed
and very, very tight during this leg of the tour. (And loud!)

I taped an interview with Dave Brock on CKLN in T.O. on Sept / 23.
It was basically a description of where the band was at during that period
in time and how they hadn't played in Toronto since 1975.

Richard Chadwick had taken the stool from Danny Thompson and
almost blew the doors off the venue during Hassan-i-Sahba.

It'll be well worth owning if the recording quality is anywhere near decent.

Well not a rip of per se. If did some digging around and they are the Japanese mini LP editions; I'm not sure if that includes the Anthologies which of course were not issue on vinyl. Now I haven't been able to establish what they contain yet but I have a few of the Japanese Mini LP CDs and they are superb. Exactly what they say on the tin, right down in lyric inserts, gatfold sleeves, The Damned's Anything even includes the pop up sleeve that was on the limited gatefold edition of the vinyl album.

A standard Japanese CD will set you back about £23-£25 plus buying from Amazon you will always get stung with import charges. If you went to an independant Japanese dealer you probaly be able to knock about £10 off per CD. Judging by the price of Levitation I'm guessing its the three CD version.

One for the collectors out there. (If I had the money..... )

It does sound like a lot of money to pay for a bit of packaging. I'll stick to Atomhenge myself.

It is one for collectors. If you just want the music stick to the Atomhenge ones, if you're a completetist better go see your bank manager.
