Just wondered if anyone else has ever played any Hawkwind at unusual speeds, say 16 rpm.

Back in 1976, a friend of mine played the 33rpm Greasy Truckers "Master of the Universe" intro at 16 rpm and the leaden riffs sounded pretty good, in a strange sort of way. Well, until the vocals come in.

The obvious one - "This Is Hawkwind: Do Not Panic" sides 3 and 4 at 33rpm. I listened all the way through (and enjoyed) Stonehenge Decoded at 33 before turning it over for Watching The Grass Grow - it was only then that I realised the second disc was 45rpm.

First heard Hawkwind LP played on a gramaphone found in the loft, didn't have a stereo. It played all different speeds depending on how much you wound it up. It had a nail instead of a stylus, I liked it, vinyl didn't.

along the same lines - i remember 'closer to the heart' - Rush going out on national radio here - about 1980 - at the slower speed - possibly being the only rush fan in the country at the time i was the only one that noticed - electronic number one would be tippy i guess!

I remember as a teen playing a few LPs - Hawkwind included - at 45 as a bit of a joke, thinking of The Dickies probably. Mysterious substances may have been present at the time...

Aka how to make Hawkwind sound weirder (because they need it). :?

I think the few times I've put things on the wrong speed would be when they're 45 RPM albums, which are rare.

One example is Tonwelle by Richard Wahnfried (Klaus Schulze in disguise). One side of this LP is excellent, but I once heard someone say they can only listen to it on 33rpm because that's how they first heard it (not realising it was supposed to be 45rpm). Easier mistake to make if it's all electronic I guess, but I tried this and it sounded sludgy. Not in a good Sabbathy way.

This is the biggest culprit for rpm mashup's.

Image

Throwing this "45" on the turntable as an inbetweenie after listening to WOTEOT and
forgetting about speed settings.
Kings Of Speed didn't sound too bad played at a heavily stoned 33rpm.

Anywee, Not going to bother with Chronicle in Satanus mode, just spoke with the person I inherited it from and this is one of the reasons that it's mine now- (he's too lazy to change belt speed), along with LTEV's "failure" ? to reproduce the inner sleeve on the inside.
Thanks??

My friend has NO problem playing HW at wrong speed but this failed :()

@ CMike- How did you get your daughter's pony to be so well behaved!!
Impressive!!!

Slightly off-topic, but when Choose Your Masques came out I'd pre-ordered it and dashed home from the record shop to play it.... but was disappointed to discover the hole was slightly off-centre (and the label on one side was so out of alignment that it obscured the last track). A very odd listen, I can tell you.

Sounds like someone at the pressing plant was so into it, they got a bit out of it.

I expect one of our collectors chums will say I should have kept it as it's worth a fortune now. It was back in the shop within an hour.
