Many an argument or legal battle could be solved if groups of musicians would all follow the example of "West, Bruce & Laing". The main problem with renaming a group every time a member leaves or is replaced is the potential loss of revenue, not so much the ambiguity of fame. branding-contests are common, whereas stage-name contests seem less so, although David Jones changed his professional name to David Bowie to avoid potential confusion.

For me, anytime a band changes their sound I have trouble thinking of them as the same "band" or "brand", even if the members are the same. Geriatric reunions are an example of this, when a group sounds like a tribute act to themselves ~ I won't name names.

There was no more Rolling Stones for me after Brian quit, prime example of the former ~ same as no more Pink Fairies, Pretty Things ~ the list goes on forever.

Ive always insisted that the reformed "Led Zeppelin" would have gone down just as successfully if they'd billed themselves as "Page, Plant, & Jones" with special guest Jason Bonham.

copyright laws, as an interesting side-point, do not protect song titles or album titles. Stage names, on the other hand, seem to fall in a sort of legal 'grey area' as there are many individual artists who do in fact record under identical names without legally challenging one another ~ though I'm willing to bet that any other female singer calling herself "Madonna" who is not Madonna Louise Ciccone would almost certainly face legal trouble.

It all comes down to "labels" and people's insistence on tagging everything. Labels have their uses ~ on food market jars, birth certificates, art projects (paintings, book titles, album titles, etc.)
It seems we always run into trouble whenever we try to hold on to a tag or place the same label on two separate and essentially different entities , whether it is a rock band or a can of peaches.

Many people do not like to be labeled as being this or that, when it comes to ideologies or sociological perspectives on identity, but will identify as a [subscriber to] a religion, citizen of a nation, family member, [member of] rock band, etc.
