Valium 10 is indeed awesome. A monster of extreme psychedelia and surely a blueprint for the trance genre. IMO This is the closest Hawkwind came to revisisting their space rock roots - it's like a late 70's take on the Brainstorm/Masters vibe. Very hypnotic but coloured by swirling synths and varying sound textures. An unrecognised Hawk classic.
The other Hawklords Rockfield tracks are interesting. Very different in feel to the 25 Years On material - more avant-garde to my ears. Time Of.. is an odd beast - some strange guitarwork going on there, sorta Faust-like overall. I'd heard Douglas.. years ago and dismissed it as a garbled jam session but to my older, more sophisticated ears, it's an intriguing slice of wigged-out delirium. Reminded me everso slightly of The Residents.
Enjoying the live stuff - a great supercharged version of Levitation!

I agree with Cold War Kid regarding Valium 10 and have thought for many years that this is crying out to be techno'd by someone such as Scooter.

My copy has arrived!! It's a belter.....Psychosis and World of Tiers fair rumble through the floor, sounds superb!! BUT....why is the live concert on 2 CDs when it would fit on one? and how will 'Zones' appear when tracks from it are on disc 3?...... Not a complaint though.....I LOVE IT!!!!!

wahey mine dropped through the door yesterday - Thanks Vicky Atomhenge have done another sterling job on this one Its really satisfying to have those Hawklords Rockfield recordings together at last - I transferred my vinyl copies of those songs onto a cdr a few years back (even the often maligned Douglas in the Jungle, which sounds much, much better in context) and I've always thought that if the Hawks had ever got round to recording that proposed second album of long repetitive trancey Valium 10 type songs, how wonderful it would have been. 'Time Of' in particular sounds like it was an edit of a longer piece..........does this still exist ? and are there any more unreleased songs from those sessions ? or am I just on (yet another) flight of fancy somewhere

Are the running times of the Hawklords tracks the same as on Weird 2, I wonder. If so, that might suggest the original tapes are lost. Yes, I'd like to hear the full 'Time Of' track!
How's about a review of the 'new' stuff (well, new to us).

The running time is largely similar for the Hawklords tracks with the exception of Time Of. This is now 4:11 whereas on Weird 2 it was 5:33. It starts differently. In fact they might actually be different parts of one longer track. I need to listen to it more.

Other than the Douglas song, which I just cannot get my head around, I have to say that this seems to be the best re release so far. I think the packaging is great, the CD booklet superb, the cards are an extra bonus and then there is the music. The album is great in my mind. The clarity a vast improvement on my old copy, Plus we get a full concert spread over two discs. I'm a big fan of live albums and love bootlegs etc as it helps to capture the moment. Never the same as being there but once you have experienced the band you can transport yourself there with the live stuff playing in the background.
All in all I am well chuffed with it. Lets hope they continue with the quality as they go along as they just seem to be getting better all the time. (i think there is a song in there somewhere).
Well done Atomhenge. Superb stuff.
