Interesting viewpoints from everyone, and all of relevance Any of the "repliers" going to the Bristol gig in December? I won't unfortunately as my pocket money for that week has already been allocated for a supply of gobstoppers, marbles and a copy of a bumper issue of the Beano. Also my mum has arranged a trip to Santa's grotto at the local shopping mall that day; can't miss that! It's a shame really, as I was hoping to see Hawkwind before my balls dropped and I start talking in a deep masculine voice. Must go now as my babysitter is here to change my nappy. Love Seamus.

Speaking of Hawkwind for the new generation, I noticed that Masters of the Universe has just been released for the computer game "Rock Band". In this game you and your mates have to bash away on your plastic guitar, drum, or microphone in time to the music. It's the first track on the "Metal Pack" disc for the game (one of the easiest tracks), so it will certainly get good exposure. Here a guy playing Lemmy's bass part.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXq8vUlErPI

What's the sound quality like? Did you find you had to complete the engineering on it, like you might have to on, say, Distant Horizons? Or is there a fault with your speakers maybe?

yeah, but did you have that interstella aura of unf*able incompetence that made mr. t's ego swell to the point he lost sight of it and mistook said condition for enlightenment? this assuredly lies at the heart of his proto-punk spirtual purity... burp! have you been blessed by jimi hendrix? no? well, blaspheme not then o shallow pated foul critter of mordor and misguided mere muso... true genius has no need of talent!
hmmm... do you really need emoticons to judge the foregoing tone? of which, couldn't we have "hawkicons"? say nik t. for "I'm havin' a larff!"?

One guy who has always namechecked HW very positively is Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree - anybody who heard the title track of Signify when it came out will know he walks the walk too. I was like "Fuck - that's Hawkwind" Hopefully the young emo kids and boys and girls whose older siblings thought Limp Bizkit and Korn were the mutt's nuts but dig PT these days will now be gravitating towards Brock & Co.

Drakrats wrote: You have to remember that kids will be following whatever is in fashion. Isn't that how we got into Hawkwind in the first place. Like many I got into them because it was anti-fashion! Back in the early 80's we didn't call it Generation X or even 'indie'. We just couldn't bare Haircut 100/Spandau Ballet/Imagination, and we wanted to look different. Enough of us to get acquainted at school but still only a handful, and it might just have easily been Iron Maiden, Rolling Stones, B52's or the Smiths. The alternative culture had shrunk from earlier. And Hawkwind was still there, at the heart of the next wave. Then came the explosion of the alternative back into mainstream culture: festival, acid house, rave, grunge, indie, britpop, jungle, but in the end it all went a bit like it's done many times - stadium AOR, packaged R&B, no more dance music. Even Kasabian are a few years old now - where's the next Black Rebel or White Stripes? ditto 'fashion'. The regular 80's made way for some real individual and alternative styles in the 90's, but seems to have shrunk again. The scene lost its focus when people stopped buying music papers (or they folded...) but it still hung on. And maybe Hawkwind hung on too. They were more a part of the Shelter charity singles in 1992 than groups half their age could ever be. always cited as a direct influence up till a few years ago, but it seems to have dried up now. Sorry for rambling, maybe i'm getting old and I've got it all wrong, but what i'm trying to say is this could be the time for HW. More difficult in this social networking i-phone age (as others have touched on - this media age) but if no one's into indie or dressing/thinking/acting differently then maybe the few who are and have no groups to latch onto will discover HW? Whatever we've still got our heroes living forever on the edge (of time) and there'll always be another weird 23-year old girl plucking Quark on a Ukulele!

Conditioning and propaganda Failing that indoctrinate your kids... my 15 year old will be chaperoning me to the Wolverhampton gig in Dec, just like he did last year... at the end of the day (yeah it gets dark), quality will always shine through... Is it me or do Planet rock (other than the 40th b'day session, and the odd rendition of silver machine) have a bit of a downer on Hawkwind ? I think that we should all send in lots of requests for the weekend request show for Hawkwind and try to blag some air time !
