I was at my Great Uncles (now deceased) house in late 1977 and it was his new album, listened to it and thought it was excellent, had to beg my mother to let me go (only 14 at the time) and see The Hawklords at Newcastle in 1978 (after saving up for ticket) it was also my first real concert (had seen Claus Wunderlich playing the organ - it was crap - with my mother). Saw them everytime they came to the 'TOON' for the next 7 years, joined army and didn't see them until the Astoria last year (like sfcxvssilvermachine) and it was such a reminder of childhood (hairs stood up when some the tracks played).
Safely back in the fold.

Not an overly interesting answer from me I'm afraid. At the age of 11 (1979), I got heavily into 60's music and the whole mod thing...at 16, things changed a fair bit, had my first scooter, but started listening to psychobilly and punk, so quite a varied musical taste. Moved into bedsits at this time (aged 16), and everything took a bit of a curveball. Most of my mates at this time were punks , and also Crass Punks, and all planning to join the peace convoy travelling community. ....ANd obviously at this time, there was a lot of Gong, Hawkwind , Van Der Graaf playing. Painted my scooter psychedelic camoflauge (it was called : Psychedlic Warlord). To cut a long story short, I've been into Hawkiwind ever since. Started going to the festivals at the time...torpedo town etc, had a few lost years, but here we are back again

I remember getting Christ The Album from the label and having to hide it from my mum in case she thought I was planning the overthrow of society.

It was in 1978 I think or maybe 1979. I was it to the stranglers at the time. I was flicking through TV and so that documentary about Mike Moorcock, within a minute or so Hawkwind clip were on. I remember thinking wow who are those guys. Not a cool thing at the time but I went to the local store as a 15/16 yo and bought Space Ritual. It didnt have the track i wanted (Silver Machine but i didnt know its name at that time) but Wow did it blow me away. I just began playing in constantly. Remains my fave album of all time and played frequently. After that I remember getting the older albums starting with Doremi (still no Silver Machine though). Got that as a single shortly afterwards. I got Levitation on the day of release and loved it as was a big Cream fan so loved Ginger Bakers drumming. My first Hawkwind show - Lewisham 1980, close to where i lived in Brixton. Fave Hawkwind show: - Stonehenge 1984 and Hammersmith 1984 Moved to Oz in 1985 so havnt seen the band since Sean in Oz

It would have been about late 83, and I'd just gone to college in Preston. Some of the people I met there introduced me to allsorts of different music (and interesting ways to help me appreciate it ), Hawkwind amongst it all. I think 'Church' or 'Quark' were the first albums I heard. Pretty soon Hawkwind were in town at the Guildhall, and I remember just being blown away by the sights, sounds, lights, people, and the whole atmosphere surrounding the gig. For the next two or three years I spent a good deal of time flitting around this country watching the Hawks, here and there, in towns, cities and a few fields. I never did right well at college, in fact I left before the end of my courses, for which I am tempted to partially blame Hawkwind.

1982 and a fresh-faced lanky 13-year-old decides to rummage through his older sister's record collection. In amongst the Gary Numan, Fairport Convention and Genesis albums, Buzzcock singles was Choose Your Masques. I loved it. Then found a few people at school who liked them (a cure/smiths fan, a two-toner skinhead, a hippy, but the metallers didn't like the band!) and went to stonehenge. I've never been the same since...

I first got into Motorhead (around 1983 when I was 15) and then I did some research on what Lemmy had been up to before Motorhead. Naturally, I first explored the Lemmy era and then moved on to the rest which has been a most gratifying journey. My Hawkwind collection is now bigger than my Motorhead collection (not surprising).

I first got into them when Silver Machine hit the charts in 1792, it was strange really cos I was a skinhead at the time and very heavily into Ska & Reggae so where Hawkwind fitted is a mystery to me.
All I do know is that I had to go to Hawkwind gigs on my own because my friends were skins too and would have ripped me apart for admitting to liking Hawkwind. I never told them when I went to Hawkwind gigs bot from 73 - 84ish I went to loads of them.
the Wind became my no 1 band bar none until the Specials came along and I moved "back to my roots" and pretty much lost contact with Hawkwind - it wasn't until Standon Calling that I felt motivated to go see them again, mainly cos I live in Standon.
That in turn, motivated me to go to see them at the Porchester, they are nothing like the band I loved 40 years ago but there is enough there to make me want to see them again.
for me, that says it all, after 40 years I still want to see them (even if there is a large number of years missing)
PS - That lucky git Dave Brock doesn't appear to have aged at all in the interviening years

While still at school was at home one night and decided to paint my bike silver as Silver Machine was playing on the radio. Then went and bought Space Ritual, found nirvana and brain melted. Long live the Hawk.

Aged 13 in 1972, switched the radio on one Saturday morning just in time to hear Kid Jensen introducing Silver Machine, I'd never heard anything like it in my life, all those layers, the hard-driving rhythm building a kind of order form the beautiful chaos. Never looked back!

Saw Silver Machine on Top of the Pops. One look at Stacia and I was hooked to the screen!!! Went straight out and got the single, loved 7 by 7 on the b side too. Bought XIn Search of Space (as soon as I saved up my pocket money), which totally blew me away. Saw them for the first time on the Mountain Grill tour in Paignton Devon early '75 I think that was, and I'm sure Nik was dressed up like a frog or something similar!!
