Anyone out there with any really old HW tshirts? And I dont just mean a tattered Choose Your Masques tshirt! I was curious to know if there were ever any early 70s ones done as I've never seen one.

The Hawk museum website had a page about HW tshirts and the general gist was that the earliest HW tshirt widely available was a red one sold on the ( I think) Astounding Sounds tour. This was all way before my time - but I do recall seeing copies of early ads for HW tshirts/vests in the reprints of early 70s underground press stuff that Hawkfrendz use to do. But its year since I've seen copies of the ads and I've never actually seen any old tshirts in real life...

Anyone shed any light?

Thats why any remaining are over £100 on ebay - as everyone has lost/thrown out their old shirts.. I used to have Masques baseball jerysey - but lent to a girlfriend then we split up and who knows where it is now...

Anyway.. back to 1970s tshirts... (The Sonic Attack tour being quite clearly 1981 and so outside the remit of this thread!! ;) ).. has anyone ever seen or heard of such a thing?

Hi

Have got one from 1971 and two from 1974.
The guy I bought the 1971 one from told me that it was worn by the Captain himself.
Indeed there is an official picture available that shows him with this shirt....

If you want a JPG file please let me know your e-mail address

cheers
Bernhard

I think the first tour T Shirt I could afford to buy, after the ticket and train fare, was a black Hawklords one with the logo in raised textured green writing, with I think Tour 78 on the back in block white capitals. Needless to say I wore it to death. They were also available in the album pink coloured lettering
I also had a t shirt from either the Live 79 tour or possibly the Levitation tour which was the large hawks head and body in profile with the band name underneath all in gold. In fact the gold colour smelt so bad I ended up throwing it out.
As you say the Sonic Attack tour doesn't count.

 I should maybe clarify, the gold transfer had an unpleasant chemical smell, infact I suspect it was probably gold spray paint out of a rattle can........no amount of joss stick burning would disguise it........so no personal hygiene issues there  .......mind you the old afghan coat was another matter altogether... :o

When I researching the walkabout I discovered two things:

1) That the Frendz shop used to sell HW t-shirts in 1972 (or so)
2) That Jim Cawthorn designed t-shirts for the band based on his 1972(-ish) Frendz comic strip "Sonic Assassins"

.... so there's definitely a history of t-shirts going back at lease 27 years. I seem to remember seeing a "1999 Party" one on Ebay some months ago, along with some 1970's ones.

I've just had a look at the shirt page of the HW museum & there are few very old tshirts on there - but the thumbnail links are broken on a few :(

It's strange - I started going to gigs in the early 80s and still have a few tshirts from that era (though rarely worn) & you still see a few Sonic Attacks/ Masques tshirts at gigs now- which is getting on for 30 yrs ago - but dont really recall seeing tshirts much earlier than Hawklords or maybe the red HWone at gigs in the early 80s - though that was just 10 yrs before! Maybe 70s shirts were rubbish quality & tshirt technology took a big leap in the 80s?

Anyway.. thanks to Bernhard for the pic of his 70s vest. Anyone else's pix of old 70s tshirts or even the tshirt ads that used to run in (I presume) Frendz - later reprinted in the early 80s by Trevor Hughes would be very welcome.

And to whoever does the merchendise - there are people who want to give you money... Get some old 70s designs redone!

:)

You may have some luck here ...... http://www.internationaltimes.it/ .... The International Times archives.

You can search using scanned in text to find Hawkwind issues then go to the original scan to see if there's any pics.
