the real reason Kim has thus far turned down requests for talks is they didnt offer an open buffet with steak and sushi and a bottomless cristal fountain

!984?
We had to hide under gymnasium mats, in school basements, with air raid sirens blaring,
during the early sixties.
"Nothing like the threat of nuclear annihilation to mold the minds of our youth."
And after that when you really don't give a shite anymore.....

At moments like these, Country Joe and the Fish's "Feel like I'm fixin to die rag" springs to mind. ;-)

"I Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die Rag"

Well, come on all of you, big strong men,
Uncle Sam needs your help again.
He's got himself in a terrible jam
Way down yonder in Vietnam
So put down your books and pick up a gun,
We're gonna have a whole lotta fun.

And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Well, come on generals, let's move fast;
Your big chance has come at last.
Now you can go out and get those reds
'Cause the only good commie is the one that's dead
And you know that peace can only be won
When we've blown 'em all to kingdom come.

And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Come on Wall Street, don't be slow,
Why man, this is war au-go-go
There's plenty good money to be made
By supplying the Army with the tools of its trade,
But just hope and pray that if they drop the bomb,
They drop it on the Viet Cong.

And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam.
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Come on mothers throughout the land,
Pack your boys off to Vietnam.
Come on fathers, and don't hesitate
To send your sons off before it's too late.
And you can be the first ones in your block
To have your boy come home in a box.

And it's one, two, three
What are we fighting for?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam.
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

to the last paragraph, one might wonder, as I do, why such measures were not implemented after NK's first or second nuclear detonation,
by now they should be long gone from the UN !!

❋ P S.
If war does break out, a large portion of blame must fall on ALL U.N. member nations for failure to stop North Korea through the harshest non-military measures which have always been available.

indeed Vik - i agree with your last comment - although embargo's can hurt joe public/children more than anyone - he won't go hungry or have to walk to work - having said that i still think a lot of the roots of this is caused by western imperialism - forgiveness/understanding and dialogue seem to me to be the only way forward - it seem's like it's at an impasse - let's hope common ground can be reached - soooon!

Appeasement is feeding others to the crocodile to ensure you are the last to be eaten. Fat Kim will only get more dangerous if he is not tackled in time.

There is an excellent TV series 'The Nazis, A Warning from History'. We tolerate at our own peril.

possibly true - tolerance can be all very well when the seed's of discontent have already been sown by the 'tolerator's'/agressor's and then decide they still want to police places where they should have no jurisdiction in - a breeding ground for recruitment - pretty rich i think!

the alternative ?

Kim refuses diplomacy.

Sanctions hurt Joe Public, whom Kim already doesnt give a rats tail about, obviously.

War is actually less likely to hurt innocent North Korean citizens, since South Korea
& U.S. will only aim for military targets ~ assuming Kim wont pull a Daesh-style act of cowardice and strap-on a ten year-old girl for protection.

Do nothing but sit down and talk to everyone except Kim Jung un, since his chair at the table will be empty, and allow him to blow off all the nukes he wants, invade & conquer South Korea, kill all the innocent people he wishes, THEN blow him out of existence.

Or, we could just blow him out of existence now, before he hurts potentially millions of innocent people.

Just like i would never consider merely talking to a man who is rushing at my daughter with a knife ! If I am not close enough to physically prevent him from reaching her, but i am holding a loaded gun, the attacker is unfortunately going down. Better him than my daughter.

a fair question, what alternative (?)

How does one convince someone who has repeatedly refused diplomacy, who continues blatant violations of United Nations resolutions, and won't even consider communication - would apparently rather engage in a war he is sure to lose - to sit down and seek a peaceful solution ?

...end...

Perhaps North Americans should be busy lobbying to get U.S. out of NATO - none of their business ! - not only unethical but a waste of taxpayer $$ needed to raise trade x Canada; rebuild bilateral manufacturing, etc.- continental defense with NORAD - oceans make good buffers - profit a prendre fair game !

We don't need to talk to NKs leader - we need to be able to talk to ordinary NK people - if they can realise that the miserable quality of their lives can be vastly improved by engaging with the real world and that their glorious leaders have lied to them for decades, they will overthrow him in a flash. This will save millions of lives.

As an aside - have you noticed that even their soldiers of all ranks look terribly undernourished? Once Piggy has been in the trough there is sod allleft for anyone else. More worryingly a recent visitor to NK said that after seeing many thousands of North Koreans, he notice that he never saw any in wheelchairs or disabled. What has happened to them? SS style cleansing?
